Why did I create the Writer’s Cafe
When brainstorming leadership projects, I knew that ultimately I wanted to create a space for students to come together and write. I envisioned it as a very open and relaxed environment and, originally, one that involved pretty tablecloths and snacks. COVID-19 had other plans.
Once we had moved to an online learning environment, I questioned whether or not I should try to create a Writer’s Cafe in such an uncertain environment when I wasn’t sure what technology I could even use to host the meetings. My school fortunately ended up approving Google Meets just when I thought I should give up on the whole idea.
How did I bring together my Writer’s Cafe
I started by sending out an invitational email to see who was interested. I messaged students who I felt would be interested in writing and any student who had engaged with my optional free writing discussion board. Only two students responded to this inquiry, but it was a start.

The first Writer’s Cafe ended up being me and only one other student, however the writing that this student took away from the Cafe was valuable. I asked him if he was interested in having another Writer’s Cafe and he enthusiastically agreed. The second Writer’s Cafe had two students joining me and I loved watching the conversations that sprang up. Both told me they want another Writer’s Cafe, so next Friday we’re going to try for three students!

Discoveries & Moving Forward
In doing two Writer’s Cafes with so few students, I’ve learned that this kind of community needs to be started in person before it can be taken online. Furthermore, I feel that it would work better had I implemented this design at the start of the year and was carrying it through. I will be taking this into consideration next year.
I also discovered that time limits are pretty… flexible. When students show up late or spend a few minutes trying to get documents opened, that 3PM deadline starts to look more like 3:30. However, if the students aren’t complaining and they’re getting something worthwhile out of the process, who am I to stop the creative flow! I will keep refining this program throughout the summer and undoubtedly throughout next year as I discover new challenges. For now, I’m just excited to see where this Friday will take us!
