After participating in the “Visual Thinking” strategy today I am wondering extensively about the benefit of “open research” in a middle school classroom. I would really like to try this out with my students as a way for them to build context about texts. In a middle school setting, how much freedom would you allow during “open research”? I think that coming up with their own essential questions would be a good way to have them self guide their research, but I also worry that a lot of them would seize the opportunity to do other activities besides research the topic.
